Scientific evidence for Homeopathy’s effectiveness

Many scientific studies have been carried out over the years that show homeopathy’s effectiveness in treating many different conditions. A small sample of these studies are listed below. For those who wish to delve deeper into this subject there are some excellent publications documenting many more positive scientific trials namely “The Emerging Science of Homeopathy by P.Bellavite M.D. and A. Signorini M.D.” and “Homeopathy, science or myth by Bill Gray M.D.”

Rheumatoid Arthritis

A double blind study published in the “British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology” in 1980 showed that homeopathy had a significant effect on symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

In a double blind study homeopathy provided a superior level of pain relief for sufferers of osteoarthritis than acetaminophen (paracetamol). This study was published in the “American Journal of Pain Management” 3 July 1998.

Diarrhoea in children

A double blind study of children suffering from acute diarrhoea in Nicaragua found homeopathy significantly decreased the duration of diarrhoea compared to placebo. (Pediatrics 1994, No.93)

Allergy

Allergy sufferers were treated with a homeopathic preparation of house dust mite or a placebo in a double blind study published in the “Lancet Dec. 10 1994″. 77% of the homeopathic group experienced improvement compared to 33% of the placebo group.

Hayfever

In a randomised controlled trial of homeopathy versus placebo in the treatment of allergic rhinitis those on homeopathic treatment experienced 28% improved nasal air flow compared with just 3% improvement in the placebo group. (British Medical Journal Aug 19 2000)

ME

In a randomised double blind trial involving 62 patients with ME, 33% of patients in the group receiving homeopathic remedies showed definite improvement compared with none in the placebo group. (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Feb, Mar, Apr 1996)

ADHD

A randomised, double blind, placebo controlled crossover trial found scientific evidence for the effectiveness of homeopathy in treating Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, particularly in the areas of behavioural and cognitive function. (European Journal of Pediatrics 27 July 2005)

Homeopathy for animals

Homeopathy has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for infants and animals. This dispels any suggestion that homeopathy’s effectiveness is reliant on the placebo effect.

In 2003 Scientists at the University of Kayalani in India have shown that the homeopathic remedy “Arsenicum Album” reduces the liver damage caused by arsenic in mice. Arsenic occurs naturally in the environment but the levels are particularly high in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Arsenic poisoning has been linked to liver disease, diabetes and cancer. The scientists led by Professor Khuda-Bukhsh found that a drop of the homeopathic remedy 3 times a day reduced arsenic levels in the mice dramatically in just 72 hours. “The potentised homeopathic drug Arsenicum Album not only has the ability to help remove arsenic from the body, but these drugs in microdoses appear to have the ability to detoxify the ill-effects produced by arsenic in mice,” said Professor Khuda-Bukhsh. The scientists are hoping to secure funding to repeat the study for humans.

Mastitis in Cows

Homeopathic medicines were shown to provide similar levels of protection as antibiotics against mastitis in cows.
“Testing the Effectiveness of Antibiotic and Homeopathic Medication in the Frame of Herd Reorganisation of Subclinical Mastitis in Milk Cows”. British Homeopathic Journal, 2000, 89, Supplement 1, S62

Urinary infections in rats

In a blinded study where rats were treated for urinary infections results showed that rats treated with homeopathic remedies had clear reduction of bacterial colonies. Results were at least as clear as for treatment with antibiotics. Untreated rats had no changes in bacteria colonies. (Gonçalves et al. O uso da homeopatia no tratamento da infecção urinária em ratas. Anais do VIII)

Stillbirth in pigs

Administration of the homeopathic remedy Caullophyllum 30C given to pigs greatly reduced the number of stillbirths.
